Personal cannabis use is now officially legalised in Germany. They are the 3rd country to legalise cannabis for personal use after Luxembourg and Malta.

The law will now allow adults to possess up to 25 grams outside/ 50 grams at home and/or grow up to 3 plants for personal use.

The law also provides provisions for the establishment of social clubs where members will be allowed to purchase a specific amount of cannabis per month - similar to the model operating in Spain.

This is significant as Germany is not only the EU's largest economy but also the largest emerging market for medicinal cannabis.

How does this affect us?

Normalisation of cannabis use in now becoming mainstream in many EU member states, which will in turn increase pressure on the local governments to adapt to changing EU norms. It also increases the chance of cannabis becoming a freely traded good within the EU as their are more and more countries allowing it's use for medicinal and/ord recreational use. The demonisation of cannabis becomes harder as more of our European counterparts successfully legalise, which allows for optimism that the new generations may be able to change the longstanding government stance on cannabis.
